About the Farm

Located on just over 8.5 acres in Grand Ledge, MI, Dragonfly Downs Farm is an integrated family homestead and permaculture farm. We blend traditional homestead production (such as a home orchard and flock of laying hens) with native plant agriculture through a permaculture design lens. We believe that by working within the complexities of natural systems and by embracing the potential of native food plants, we can steward our land in ways that provide abundant resources for human and non-human kin. We understand the role restoration agriculture can play in restoring health to our land and environment, and we respect the soil as the foundation of all health. Nourishing our soil and tending to Earth’s living systems provides nourishment in turn to our bodies, hearts and mind.

About Our Farmer

Since she was a child, Egypt dreamed of a homesteader’s lifestyle. Growing up on a family dairy farm in Southeast Michigan gave her a window in the joys of raising livestock and a deep grounding in her own place within Earth’s living systems. While studying at Michigan State University, Egypt spent time learning the ins and outs of organic vegetable production at the MSU Student Organic Farm, and spent her free time exploring productive homesteading skills such as food preservation, spinning fiber, and processing game. After graduating college, Egypt dedicated her life to family-centered homesteading and community based agriculture systems. She has over a decade’s experience managing a robust urban homestead and multiple urban vegetable farms, and holds a certificate in Permaculture Design.

Egypt has studied integrated, sustainable farming systems on five continents. In France, she learned traditional cheesemaking skills, goat dairy management, and studied biodynamic farming practices. In Peru Egypt studied traditional potato production and learned to spin alpaca wool from local grandmothers. Learning alongside an international cohort of young people dedicated to environmentally conscious agriculture, Egypt visited small integrated farms in rural Japan and observed traditional rice harvesting systems. Most recently, Egypt visited farms and traiditonal food processing operations in South Africa and Zambia through a professional exchange program coordinated through the US State Department & MSU.

In addition to small farming, Egypt is a food preservation master and an avid forager. Every year she fills her family’s pantry with a wide array of canned, dehydrated, frozen, and fermented goods. Managing a productive, healthy household is a deeply held value. She strives to care for her family in ways that promote both physical and emotional health, for both her household and the larger community. Sustainable living and and an empowered, loving childhood that promotes independent learning and capable young people are core family values.

Egypt is also a skilled educator, with extensive experience teaching both youth and adults. Egypt has held casual skills trainings in an array of homesteading topics ranging from canning, freezing, to processing game and small livestock. Professionally, she has many years experience leading gardening and food preservation workshops and an urban gardening certificate program in her role as Hunter Park GardenHouse Director. She has served as a guest instructor for MSU’s Organic Farmer Training Program and recently presented at the Great Lakes Ag Expo.

Egypt has designed and implemented engaging youth gardening education programs for a wide array of ages. In addition to her role at Allen Neighborhood Center, Egypt has taught youth through roles as a nanny, a homeschool mom, and as lead organizer for a local childcare cooperative. She believes in children’s fundamental capability to learn and grasp real-world skills, and in the power of time spent in nature to heal and nurture.

In early 2023, her family decided to take the plunge and purchased a 8.5 acre rural homestead in Grand Ledge. Egypt is excited to use this beautiful land as a center to share the skills and knowledge she as gained with other families interested in living a sustainable, grounded , productive lifestyle. Whether you are urban or rural, just starting out or have a few years under your belt, there’s a Dragonfly Downs Farm course meant for you!
