Studies have shown that US kids can, on average, identify over 1,000 corporate logos—but only a few plants and animals. We’d like to change that!

We know that children are capable of learning how to identify and use plants in their environment. Our youth foraging club will give youth an empowering connection to the natural world, learning to identify, harvest, and utilize dozens of plants (and recognize few insects, songbirds, and other small animals while they’re at it). By learning to know the plants in their world as familiar friends rather than unrecognizable strangers, youth will find a lifelong connection to the natural world.

Suggested age: 7-13 years

We choose to offer mixed-age classes, as both modern research and traditional practice show children greatly benefit from mixed-age play and learning groups. Younger peers look up to and learn from older students, and older youth benefit learning how to be mentors.

You as parent know your child best—children may be ready for our course a little before or a little after age 7. In general, youth should be able to respect verbalized boundaries, follow directions, and safely use cutting tools to participate in this course.
